Cruelty-Free Vs. Vegan

by Tiffany

Animal testing is such a cruel and unnecessary process.

It is so upsetting to observe and sit through videos of these innocent creatures go through such torture just for our benefit. Although humans and animals are not one and the same. We have completely different metabolisms and animals don’t suffer from the same diseases that humans do such as diabetes or heart failure unless induced. Even if something tested on animals does not affect them or does, it does not mean the same results will transfer to human use. So why even test on these creatures? Where is the evidence that animal testing benefits medical research? In fact, I would argue that there is greater evidence that animal testing has more cons that any pros that could be named.

Over 90% of drugs that pass animal testing fail during human trials. It is an expensive process.

Technology evolves everyday. There are many alternatives popping up for animal testing. Some of these include computer models to create data of the human body and to better predict how humans may react to certain products or foods.

So in an effort to pay attention and to take notice of the products I use I go on different sites to check and see if the makeup or beauty products I am buying are cruelty free.

Here’s a few that I take a look at:

Cruelty Free obviously means that products are not tested on animals. However it is important to pay attention to company websites. Usually they will have a stance on their website that states whether or not they are cruelty free. Of course it is important to pay attention because their website may say something along the lines of them being cruelty-free except when it is required by law. This means that the company sells in China, as it is one of the only countries that still requires animal testing. However there are many websites that will give you lists of vegan or cruelty-free companies.

Although cruelty-free is great it does not mean a product is vegan. This can be a little confusing and I was confused for a while of the subject matter. Cruelty-free beauty products may still contain animal byproducts within them, meaning they are not vegan. For example beeswax is not vegan and may be found in some more waxy products. Doesn’t really make sense. There is a lot of confusion here and sometimes you have to do a lot of research to find out what products are vegan or just cruelty-free, but with the help of the sites above and even your own research you can easily find out if what you are using is completely vegan.

I’m currently making an effort to buy fully vegan products, but I know that some of the products I have probably do not meet those fully vegan requirements. Although transitioning to cruelty-free makeup first gives a lot of room for research and you will most likely come across some fully vegan brands.

Here’s some pictures of my favorite makeup products that are cruelty free: Products are Italicized

  • E.L.F: I believe all of their makeup products are vegan, however I’m not quite sure if their brushes are.  Flawless Finish Foundation, Lip exfoliate, blush palette, smudge pot, Prism eye shadow Palette.
  • Wet n Wild: Not all of their products are vegan, but they are cruelty free-Retractable Eyebrow Pencil, Color Icon Blush
  • Essence: Some products are not vegan, but they are cruelty-free and super affordable. Lash Princess, Satin Touch Blush, Pure Nude Highlighter, Brow gel,
  • Colourpop: Cruelty-free/some products not vegan- Dream Street Palette, Lippie Stix, Satin Lipsticks
  • NYX: Has a list on their website of vegan products- Eyebrow Pencil
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills: Labels their vegan products- Contour Palette
  • Physicians Formula: Mostly vegan/Cruelty Free-Butter Bronzer
  • IT Cosmetics: Not vegan/cruelty free- Concealer, Celebration Foundation
  • Josie Maran- Cruelty-free, natural, has many vegan options- Coconut Watercolor Eyeshadow

Here are also some of the beauty products I have been trying out. I find it much more difficult to find products such as shampoo. All of these are cruelty free and I believe the ones I picture below are vegan.

  • Tom’s of Main Anti plaque and Whitening toothpaste: Majority of products they have are vegan
  • Wowe-Bamboo toothbrush- Better for the environment
  • The Seaweed Bath Co. Citrus Vanilla Body wash: A majority, if not all, their products should be vegan
  • Palmers Coconut Oil Formula Body Lotion: Most products are vean, however some do contain animal products
  • Alba Botanica Shampoo and Conditioner: Coconut Milk: All products are vegan except for those that contain honey or beeswax
  • Crystal Deoderant- Vegan and Cruelty Free
